Eugen d'Albert (1864-1932) enjoyed an illustrious and colourful career as both concert pianist and composer. He wished to include J.S. Bach's music in his concerts and sought the grandeur of some of the large secular organ works. The transcriptions he made for this purpose are arguably better than the numerous Bach transcriptions made by his contemporaries. D'Albert's versions of eight secular masterworks present them remarkably close to their original form, yet perfectly matched to the modern piano. At times, they make very considerable technical demands, but the effort to master them is amply rewarded. This 116-page volume marks their first appearance since they were first issued over a century ago. Many errors and inaccuracies have been remedied and English translations of his musical terms have been provided.

The most important and only autograph source of the French Suites, the Klavierbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach (1722) contains the first three suites in fragments only, and the sixth not at all. This is why the numerous copies which have come down to us, are of special significance. Among the copies of major importance is the manuscript which for a long time had been attributed to Bach, and which comprises the first for suites in full (Deutsche Staastsbibliothek, Berlin) as well as the copy by Gerber (1725-26) and the second volume of the Klavierbüchlein (1925). A few manuscripts originating from the circle of Bach's pupils should also be added to them. The texts of thevarious copies show a lot of deviations. The present edition relies on the first formulation - at least where this can be decided at all - but it gives all the major devations of the copies as variants, either in footnotes or after the movement concerned. The Reformation cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80b, published by Carus-Verlag for the first time in a practical performing edition, remained unknown to Bach scholars until well into the 20th century. The evidence of its existence is three fragments of the first folio of Bach's score, which can be dated to the years 1728-1731. By contrast, the long-familiar expanded new version of the cantata with its powerful opening chorus (BWV 80) dates from the 1730s or 1740s. It only survives in a copy of Bach's score, but this allows conclusions to be drawn about the history of the versions; thus, by using the fragments mentioned above, it has been possible to reconstruct the first version. This result is a Bach cantata which is less extensive and in a more concise normal format, with reduced wind instruments. A relaxed, contrapuntal four-part chorale movement with the first and last verses of the Lutheran hymn forms the framework, and the other movements are the same as in the later new version. This simpler cantata is also entirely suitable for celebrating Reformation Day, as Bach did around 1730. Score available separately - see item CA.3108000.

In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3114900.

Besides the Weihnachtsoratorium BVW 248, Bach composed an additional work for the feast days of the church year 1734/35: The Himmelfahrtsoratorium BWV 11 (Ascension Oratorio). Although in its dimensions and character the oratorio is akin to his cantatas, it occupies a special position as a result of the epic text on which it is based; the text includes a biblical story. In particular, the festive atmosphere and instrumentation of the opening and closing choruses mirror the triumphant joy of Christ's ascension. This is a new edition in the Stuttgart Bach Editions series, edited by Ulrich Leisinger. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3101100.

The new Breitkopf Urtext edition by Joshua Rifkin draws on all relevant sources to restore the Mass to the state in which Bach left it for posterity. This means, first, a clear separation of the Kyrie and Gloria from the earlier Missa of 1733. Moreover, in the Credo the Symbolum Nicenum Rifkin has faced the challenge of sweeping away the overlay of additions by C.P.E. Bach and eliminating his alterations more thoroughly than Friedrich Smend had in the Neue Bach Ausgabe of 1954 and in later editions as well. The NBA edition of this work has long been thought to be unsatisfactory, so in this case Breitkopf study score is better as well as a few euros cheaper.
